BMW's lineup includes a confounding amount of wagons and SUVs, but Cars.com reviewer Joe Bruzek said the automaker got it right with the X1. Although it's small, Bruzek says it delivers big when it comes to value, fuel economy and driving excitement.
Two-wheel-drive versions of the 2013 BMW X1 start at $31,725 (all prices include a $925 destination fee). Our test model was an all-wheel-drive xDrive 28i with a 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder starting at $33,425.

Ford is recalling 370,000 model-year 2005-2011 versions of the Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car sedans due to a steering problem, the Detroit News is reporting.
In the affected vehicles, the lower intermediate steering shaft could corrode, resulting in a possible loss of steering. Ford said it's not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the recall, the paper reported.
States where corrosion is more likely to occur include Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
Dealers will inspect and replace the affected parts for free. Owners can call Ford at 866-436-7332.

Every year we not only evaluate cars on their own merits but also against the top competitors in the field. Here are our most recent tests.

The $38,000 Midsize SUV Challenge

We tested six SUVs on the streets and highways of suburban (and rural) Chicago and northeastern Illinois. To make the cut, these SUVs had to cost less than $38,000.

Luxury sedans have a significant price of entry. One car in our test proved it was a far superior performer on the track and on the road.

Some of the best-selling cars in the country were recently redesigned, and we put six of them to the test in this vital segment.

Add the 2014 Ford Taurus to the list of cars that can hold three child-safety seats across its backseat. This full-size sedan aced our Car Seat Check, earning A's in all our fit categories.
Ford has an interesting Latch anchor setup in the Taurus. The two sets of anchors are set more inward than usual in the backseat, allowing a car seat to be installed in the middle seat position with the Latch system. This makes it more flexible than a lot of sedans, but it's important for parents to remember that only one car seat may be installed using one set of Latch anchors — there's no doubling up.
When we installed three car seats in the Taurus, we put the infant seat in the middle and used Latch anchors to secure it. Then we used the seat belt to install the forward-facing convertible behind the front passenger seat. We also used a seat belt with the booster.
How many car seats fit in the second row? Three
What We Like
  • The Latch anchors are set pretty deep into the seat cushions, but they're easy to access because the seat bottom cushions are pliable.
  • A flat seat bottom cushion made for easy installation of all the child-safety seats.
  • Both the rear-facing infant and convertible seats fit easily in the Taurus' backseat. There was no need to move the front passenger seat forward.
What We Don't
  • Because the Latch system setup is unusual, there's a chance that parents will misuse it and connect two car seats to one Latch anchor. This is dangerous because Latch anchors in any car haven't been crash-tested with two car seats attached to a single anchor.

Grading Scale
A: Plenty of room for the car seat and the child; doesn't impact driver or front-passenger legroom. Easy to find and connect to Latch and tether anchors. No fit issues involving head restraint or seat contouring. Easy access to the third row.
B: Plenty of room. One fit or connection issue. Some problems accessing third row when available.
C: Marginal room. Two fit or connection issues. Difficult to access third row when available.
D: Insufficient room. Two or more fit or connection issues.
F: Does not fit or is unsafe.
About Cars.com's Car Seat Checks
Editors Jennifer Geiger and Jennifer Newman are certified child safety seat installation technicians.
For the Car Seat Check, we use a Graco SnugRide 30 infant-safety seat, a Britax Roundabout convertible seat and Graco TurboBooster seat. The front seats are adjusted for a 6-foot driver and a 5-foot-8 passenger. The three child seats are installed in the second row. The booster seat sits behind the driver's seat, and the infant and convertible seats are installed behind the front passenger seat.
We also install the forward-facing convertible in the second row's middle seat with the booster and infant seat in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit; a child sitting in the booster seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle. If there's a third row, we install the booster seat and a forward-facing convertible.
Parents should also remember that they can use the Latch system or a seat belt to install a car seat.

Buick, the brand, is on a roll. Conquest sales are up, meaning there are far more people who are new to buying any GM car coming into dealerships and walking out with a new Buick. Building cars like the 2014 Buick LaCrosse and steadily improving quality and customer satisfaction is working to attract new customers.
For the 2014 model year, Buick's biggest American sedan receives a mild face-lift and a revised interior with some new color choices and content. Outside, the front and rear end get a little crisper, with LED taillights that evoke the style of the Hyundai Equus; that's not a bad thing, as both the Equus and LaCrosse are attractive cars. Up front, a new grille and headlights keep things fresh and attractive. The overall look is still clean but chunky: This is a big car and there's no disguising that.

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 133,000 model-year 2006-10 Highlander Hybrids and 2006-08 Lexus RX 400h hybrid crossovers.
The Problem: Heat damage to the transistors in the hybrid system could impair electrical circuits, causing warning lights to illuminate and the vehicle to enter a "limp home" mode. "In limited instances, the hybrid system will shut down, resulting in the vehicle stopping while the vehicle is being driven," Toyota said in a statement.
The Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the affected parts for free.
What Owners Should Do: Owners will be notified via registered mail. They can also call 800-331-4331 or go to www.toyota.com/recall andwww.lexus.com/recall for more information.

Last month, our 2013 Honda Civic LX proved it's capable of exceeding the EPA's 39 mpg highway rating by a few mpgs after we calculated a 42.2 mpg fill-up during a highway cruising road trip. This month, the Civic again backed up its excellent highway mileage on a trek from Chicago to Detroit. The sedan returned the highest-recorded fuel-economy yet: 42.8 mpg.
The 42.8 mpg tank helps bump our Civic's average recorded mileage to 31.93 mpg, which is up .8 mpg compared to last month. Our staffers scorched the roads this month in the Civic — maybe lightly charred is more appropriate given the Civic's 140-horsepower — racking up 2,712 miles in August.
At the same time, our 2013 Subaru BRZ is puttering along just fine without much change in overall mileage. We drove the BRZ 1,165 miles last month, and picked up a massive rock chip on the highway; we'll have more to report on this in the coming weeks.
